Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my nonprofit need charitable registration?
Most states require any nonprofit that solicits donations from their residents — even online — to register before fundraising. Failing to register can mean fines, public censure, and in some states, personal liability for the board.
How many states will I need to register in?
It depends on where you ask for donations. If your website’s “Donate” button is visible nationwide, ~40 states technically require registration. Most nonprofits start with the states where they have the largest donor concentrations and add others over time.
What happens if I miss a renewal?
Late fees, suspension of your registration, public listings of non-compliance, and in worst cases revocation of your authority to solicit. Reinstatement is usually possible but always more expensive and time-consuming than staying current.
Do you handle the IRS 501(c)(3) application too?
Yes — see our Tax-Exempt Status Application Service on the Maintain a Business page. We help you draft, file, and follow up on Form 1023 or 1023-EZ.
Can I track the value of volunteer hours for grant applications?
Yes — use the calculator above. Most foundations and government grantors accept Independent Sector’s state-specific rates as the standard for valuing in-kind volunteer contributions.
